Too much wine last night? Unfortunately drinking wine comes with a few more consequences that you hoped for and probably a few that you did not even think of. The good news, it's happened to us all and something that often seems great at the time and therefore you're likely to repeat it over again. Getting over a hangover, especially if you have to be bright and sparkly for the next day, is not as easy as it seems. So let’s hope you plan to go drinking over the weekend and you have plenty of time to sleep the night off…alas. You might not be in that category. There is some kind of art in drinking wine that you need to remember, it is made to be drank slowly with style. Drink less of a good quality wine. Depending on the person you might suffer a worse headache with red wine than with white. Especially if the wine is cheaper, the cheaper the wine the worse the consequences. Here are some tips to keep you going the next day…
Water… water and more *LEMON water. Staying hydrated while drinking as well as just before you go to bed might be secret to washing out all the toxins from your body. From you first sip of your expensive wine, of course, your liver has been working overtime to clear the alcohol from your system. *Adding 10 ml of lemon juice to your water increases the amount of vitamin C in your system and this aids in decreasing the inflammation of the liver. The liver needs all the help you can give it.
Sinus Pill/ Allergy Tablet - If you spent some time in a smoking area especially if the venue had very little circulation, your allergies might act up… or rather… will. If you have any over the counter allergy medication close by having one of them before you go to bed, or in the morning might clear up some stuffiness. Some people might mistake a blocked sinus for a headache.
Shower Before Bed - You have to shower before going to bed and in the morning. Number one… you might not get up on time, and your priority list in the morning might not include a shower… Yes, I know, people like you are out there! Number two it also washes away any lovely scents you might have picked up during the evening. Number three both showers will be refreshing and we all know the smelling like you had a cologne bath* is not so sexy around midday. *I hope some do not see this as advice.
Headache Tablet - You need to be sure how many meds you are taking in. If you are unsure if your headache pills and drinking might interact… rather drink it in the morning. If you have done this before, drinking one after breakfast the next day. Sometimes our body signals for food and water and we read the signal as a signal for medication.
Eat Breakfast - Yes, you might not feel like it and you definitely would rather not… but you can choose some foods that will help you replace some electrolytes that were lost as well as adding some color to your cheeks. Orange juice adds some vitamin C, banana adds some potassium to your aching muscles and eggs contain cysteine that helps your break down acetaldehyde formed when drinking too much.
So with all these forces combined, you might just survive your day. Just might. Coffee will definitely give you a kickstart but don’t drink that instead of water. Going for a walk to sweat out some toxins will also help. If all else fails, pop into your local pharmacy for the latest hangover cure. You might just find some magic there.
