What’s the Best Wine Aerator? Difficult question and before we answer this question we have a few other questions to ask and provide answers for. The first question that really springs to mind would be, Do you really need an aerator? As we show below, the answer is a definite yes. The second question that we need to understand would be, what a great aerator is and more importantly, what makes a great wine aerator. A wine aerator is usually a small hand held pour through or decanter top unit that is used to put air into wine. It works by the drinker pouring wine into the unit and as the wine flows over the unit, it mixes air with wine and thus cases aeration and offers an alternative to traditional decanting.
Wine aerator’s have been designed to mix wine with the oxygen within the air which encourages the flavor of your wine to show itself. By using an aerator you force the air to be circulated within the wine which allow the wine to aromatic profile or softer tannin’s. Some wine aerators can achieve this in seconds and are most appropriate for meals where time of the essence.
Do You Need A Wine Aerator?
We test, drink and review hundreds of wine each year and for us this is a very easy question to answer. The simply answer is that by aerating wine you are adding flavor to it and therefore this can only be a good thing, however whilst we think that manual aerator do a very good job, we still think that the best way to aerate a bottle of wine is to decant in and leave it to sit for a couple of hours. That all said, where an aerator is very useful, is in those situations where you don’t want to wait for a couple of hours to drink your wine. In this situation, an aerator is vital and really adds value.
Through our experience we have found that even beginner wine tasters find that they can tell the difference between glass of wine that has been poured straight our of the bottle and one that has been poured through an aerator. Yes its true that they can tell the difference again between a glass of wine that has been poured through an aerator and a decanter, however when time is of the essence, an aerator can only add flavor to your wine, and only make it more drinkable and therefore we think that anyone who wants to drink wine, should have an aerator.
What Aerator Style Is Best
There are a huge number of different aerators each with a slightly different way of operating. The most common is probably the injection hand held aerator which uses a combination of a wide to narrow wine entry to mix wine with the oxygen with in the air, however there are other types such as the Decanter or Over Flow Aerator. Below we have tried to explain in more detail your options;
- Injection Style Aerator – The injection aerator works by directing wine through a wide tube that quickly narrows meaning that as wine flow through the unit, it mixed with air in a similar way to the Venturi Effect in engineering applications.
- Single Glass Aerator – This type of aerator is very similar to that used when you buy boxed wine.
- Decanter Top Aerator – This type of aerator works as the user pours wine over the unit causing agitation which creates bubbles in your wine and encourages oxygen to bind with the wine.
- Pourer Wine Aerator – This type of aerator has been designed to immediately aerate wine as your pour your wine into it and allow wines to quickly mix with the oxygen within the air as you pour it into your glass.
Best Wine Aerator
Vinturi Deluxe Wine Aerator
The Vinturi Deluxe aerator is probably the easiest wine aerator to use out of all the aerators that we have ever tested and due to the fantastic performance we personally use this aerator with all our wine and firmly think it's the best wine aerator on the market. The set comes as a two piece design which has the added benefit of being easy to use, clean and store. To use, the two piece design takes just seconds to put together leaving with you with a stylish, no splash tower meaning that your Vinturi aerator can site directly on top allowing for easy, hands-free operation. The tower is a fantastic option epecially if you're trying to pour the entire bottle into a decanter given that it might seem very easy at first, but steady the bottle and aerator
is actually a more difficult process that you would think especially when you get to the end of the bottle and are starting to get tired. The aerator stand really helps to support this process and helps to stop any spillage.
To use, the user simply has to place a wine glass underneath the tower and pour wine through the aerator into the glass. The Vinturi works fantastically well because of its patent pending design that speeds up the aeration process by instantly aerating wine and therefore allow it to open up, release its intended aromas, and of course make it taste better. Users and Wine lovers love it alike and most importantly both items are dishwasher safe.
Nuance Wine Finer Aerator
The Nuance Wine aerator works slightly differently from the Vinturi above and rather than pouring wine into the aerator, the Nuance wine Aerator fits directly into the wine bottle, allowing wine to filter through it as you pour. The design of this aerator is from the Danish designer Marcus Vagnby who decided that this was a better way of aerating wine. This type of aerator has the added benefit of serving as a bottle stopper once you have finished allowing your wine to keep its flavor.
One of the annoying things that we don’t like about the Vinturi is that you have to really concentrate whilst your pouring your wine into the aerator otherwise you end up pouring too much wine in to the aerator and it over flows creating a mess. The best thing about the Nuance is that this does not happen as the aerator fits easily and simply into the bottle, creating a sealed fit, meaning that you can easily pour wine from across the table. Overall, we love the Nusance, however remember to clean it properly. Its not dishwasher safe and therefore needs to be cleaned by hand. If you miss and leave either old wine or something on your aerator you could really end up destroying your future bottles of wine.
True Fabrications Wine Aerator
The True Fabrications Wine Aerator is one the best aerators on the market for a couple of reasons. Firstly its fantastic value for money and secondly its so simply to use. It cannot break as there are no moving parts and most importantly it works well. The true fabrications wine aerator works in a way where you pour wine directly in the unit, the pour spout aerates the wine with a dual air intake system and an air-blending strainer. The unit has been constructed from stainless acrylic and rubber, making it extremely durable and dishwasher safe meaning that its very easy to clean. There are downside of course to a small, portable unit with the biggest problem being that you have have to place your glass on the table and hold the wine bottle in one hand and the wine aerator in the other and hold them both together.
For a full bottle of wine, especially magnums, this get quite difficult and therefore there is a major risk that you will spill your wine everywhere.
